Project Description: For this project we had to make a larger or smaller scale of something. Like if you scaled a gumball up by about 2 times then that gumball would be 2 times bigger than the gumball you originally had. The scale that I made was a Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket 3 times as big as the original. Three different benchmarks must have been turned in throughout the project. A lot of worksheets and activities were incorporated before this project began. They had to do with what were were learning like things being congruent, similarity, rotation, mirroring, and reflection. I feel like the purpose of this project was to imply everything that we are learning into scaling.
Understanding Concepts: The relationship between similarity and proportion is that if something is similar that means that it’s not exactly the same, but also not completely different. If the proportions of the two shapes are different like one side is shorter than the other or the shape is not the same then it is not similar. Dilation goes with this too because dilation really similar a thing because dilation changes the size of one of two shapes and keeps them the same shape.
Benchmarks: For the first benchmark we had to make a description of what are main idea is for our project. I said I will make a Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket 2 times the original size, also said materials we would need for our product. For the second benchmark we had to draw our product and have our calculations on it. What I did was I drew the original bucket and drew the bucket that is 3 times bigger and had the calculations next to both of the buckets. For the third benchmark we all had to bring in the products that we created. The KFC bucket that my group created was made out of paper and paint.
Reflection: I feel very good about this project I definitely learned a lot from it a good example would be time management. I honestly think that our materials were not the best, but we still found ways to make this product work. Two habits of a mathematician that I used throughout the project was being organized and being patient and persistent. I had to be organized so I wouldn’t lose my materials or my calculations. I had to be patient and persistent so I would be determined to find work I can do while I waited for the materials I needed. Some challenges I faced were not being able to find materials and also time was a big challenge. Since we used a lot of time getting materials we had to squeeze a lot of time to build the product. Overall I feel like our product turned out great and that our group worked very well together.
